Silk Road Rising Artistic Director Jamil Khoury and Executive Director Malik Gillani have announced the World Premiere of The Lake Effect, written by Rajiv Joseph, directed by Timothy Douglas. The Lake Effect runs April 23 - May 26, 2013, in Pierce Hall at The Historic Chicago Temple Building, 77 W. Washington St, Chicago.
The Lake Effect is set in a depressed Cleveland neighborhood amidst a fierce winter storm, where an Indian American brother and sister, long estranged, are reunited by the sudden death of their father. Enter their late father's African American confidante and gambling bookie, and a slew of family secrets get unearthed. The Lake Effect sets in motion a complicated web of relationships and conflicts that challenge our perceptions of race, gender, and success.
"With Rajiv Joseph and Timothy Douglas at the helm, you know something extraordinary is unfolding at Silk Road Rising," boasts Artistic Director Jamil Khoury. "The Lake Effect represents new American theatre at it's craftiest. Clever, funny, daring, and unafraid to probe it's own discomfort zones. Political correctness, 'model minorities,' and brown-black solidarity quickly unravel in this stunningly frank tale of dysfunctional families and the limits of individualism."
The Lake Effect was co-commissioned by Silk Road Rising and Crossroads Theatre (New Brunswick, New Jersey) with development support from The Lark Play Development Center (New York City).
The cast of The Lake Effect includes: Adam Poss, Minita Ghandi, and Mark Smith.
The design team includes: Dan Stratton (Set), Sarah Hughey (Lighting), Janice Pytel(Costumes), Rick Sims (Sound), Jesse Gaffney (Props), and Neal Ryan Shaw (Dramaturg). The stage manager is John G Phillips. Assistant Director is Corey Pond.
