In 2011, Silk Road Theatre Project was gearing up for its tenth season, a major milestone in theatre years. Always striving to stay ahead of a rapidly changing sector, we began visualizing ourselves in an upward motion: artists and ideas and communities all on the rise. This bold visioning necessitated a new name, Silk Road Rising, invoking meanings both aspirational and ascendant. As in rising to new heights, new challenges, and new consciousness.
We knew that expanding representation of Asian and Middle Eastern peoples could best be achieved through multiple mediums. Our work had already extended into classrooms, community centers, digital media, and movement building. The words “theatre project” could no longer convey the breadth of this work. We needed a name that was flexible and evocative and broad enough to let us soar, on our own terms. This was and remains unchartered territory. We’re innovating something new.
